Indian Health Service Practical Nurse (Outpatient) in Eagle Butte, South Dakota

Summary

This position is located in the nursing department of the Cheyenne River Health Center in Eagle Butte, SD. The purpose of the position is to provide direct patient care to patients with a variety of medical, surgical, pediatric, women's health, and health maintenance needs. Performs duties under the general supervision and guidance of a registered nurse and assists other health care providers in providing care and maintaining a safe and quality care environment.

Responsibilities

Provides direct care for ambulatory care patients of all ages with diverse nursing and medical diagnoses and health care/maintenance needs. Collects data on health status of the patient using established assessment skills to identify immediate health care/maintenance and nursing needs. Assesses changes in patient's conditions and implements appropriate interventions and/or reports changes to the supervising registered nurse as appropriate. Documents observations, measurements, nursing interventions and outcomes for assigned patients in the medical record using approved forms and formats.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-04: Perform nursing care for the purpose of receiving orientation. Provide nursing care for and assistance to patients in meeting their personal hygiene. Obtain and label routine urine, stool and sputum specimens. Measure and record body temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure for the patient's records. GS-05: Experience in recognizing need for and institute emergency measures when indicated. Experience in performing catheterization, changes surgical dressing, performs suctioning. Experience in administering vitamins, antibotics, and corticosteroids. Experience in calculating and adjusting infusion rates using standard formulas or electronic controlling devices. GS-06: Experience in assisting with escorting/transporting patient's to various services areas in the health center. Experience in instructing patient's role in various procedures and assists with chaperoned examinations. Experience in reinforcing patient teaching given by the professional nurse and medical staff. Experience in administering oral medications, performing subcutaneous and intramuscular injections. Experience in maintaining immunization inventory including ordering, logging, and reporting. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 90 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.
