The Exploratory Science Center (ESC) in Cambridge provides a unique experience to contribute to our drug discovery efforts at one of the earliest stages of the process. To this end, we strive to create a fast-paced, nimble and flexible environment of mutual respect, creativity, invention and teamwork. Co-op students will be part of a highly collaborative and innovative scientific culture with the ultimate goal of learning new biology that drives therapeutic development. Students will be exposed to Immunology, Microbiology, Chemical Biology, Target Discovery, Synthetic Chemistry and Bioactive Discovery both within the Exploratory Science Center and other sites across the country. With access to our proven global R&D organization, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding their career.

Mass spectrometry-based proteomics plays a critical role in drug and target discovery, yet intelligent data acquisition strategies tailored to specific applications remain highly underdeveloped. We are looking for a bioinformatics/computational co-op student who will aid target discovery efforts at the ESC by developing improved instrument control algorithms designed to direct the mass spectrometer to spend more time on ions of interest, instead of molecular diversions present in samples. This co-op will utilize the ThermoFisher Orbitrap API coding environment to program advanced data acquisition algorithms designed to maximize signal-to-noise for peptides of significant interest present at trace levels. This co-op will work remotely off-site but will engage in continuous scientific interchange with mentors and, as a member of the ESC, will participate in departmental and project-specific meetings.

Required Education and Skills:

  • Candidates must be a currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior student pursuing a bachelor’s degree or a graduate studies in chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, bioinformatics, or a closely related field.

  • Candidates must be a quantitative thinker with attention to details

  • Candidates must be comfortable using a PC and proficient in Windows-based scientific applications.

  • Candidates must have hands-on coding experience in C/ C++/ C# or other scientific computing languages.

  • Candidates must have experience with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation or mass spec data analysis

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have basic computer application development skills.

  • Candidates should have experience with cell culture, biochemistry laboratory techniques, MS sample prep and MS instrument programing using vendor-based and custom software.

  • Candidates should be highly motivated and driven. Willing to take initiative to learn new areas of science and eagerness to contribute to cutting-edge research.

  • Candidates should be a strong team player.

  • Candidates should have excellent communication skills.
