Merck Data Science and Bioinformatics Team Lead in Pierre, South Dakota

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatics team leader and data scientist to join our global research team at our Company. A successful candidate will partner with bench scientists and data analysts in our Company's Research Labs, Information Technology, and across our Company's enterprise to apply advanced computational methods and data analytics for genomics, target identification, target validation and biomarker discovery programs. The role will focus on developing and automating high-performance computational pipelines, applying machine learning and other statistical inference methods, incorporating key external datasets, and integrating multi-dimensional internal and external data sets to support our Company’s drug discovery biology and translation medicine research.

Job responsibilities

  • Develop, mentor, and lead a team of bioinformaticians and computational biologists, to generate insights that materially influence scientific decision making

  • Proactively engage with diverse scientific communities in Translational Oncology, Discovery Biology and Data Analytics in our Company's Research Labs

  • Drive innovation by applying state of the art tools and technologies, such as by developing novel bioinformatic, statistical and machine learning methodologies, built atop industry best-practices

  • Work with engineering groups to support infrastructure development to support scalable processing of complex data processing and analysis workflows

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Masters plus five years experience, or Ph.D. plus one year experience, in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or a related field

  • 3+ years of demonstrated ability to apply advanced computational skills to answer scientific questions

  • 3+ years experience developing, implementing, and applying data analysis workflows

  • Experience operating in a HPC Unix environment, cloud-based computational and/or pipelining platforms

  • Proficiency in Python, R, and other scripting languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional project teams

  • Version control and related code reproducibility practices (git, documentation, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience working with multi-omic and NGS data, including developing pipelines and analyzing genomic data

  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-expert audience to drive effective decision-making.

  • A proven track record of scientific publications and technical team mentorship
