Indian Health Service Health Technician (Optometry) in Pine Ridge, South Dakota
The position is located within Pine Ridge Service Unit (PRSU), Pine Ridge Indian Health Service (IHS) Hospital in the Optometry Department. The duties of the position is to provide technical duties in support of the optometry clinic, to provide coordination of the optometry department, outpatient services, and the Joslin Vision Network (IHSJVN) Diabetes Eye Care Program Imaging services for diabetic and eye clinic patients.
Receives and prepares patients for Optometric services and optical dispensing. Interviews patients and records health history and other appropriate findings. Performs simple repairs of damaged or broken frames. Maintains a number of recurring reports, including those concerning patients, materials, and equipment. Performs filing, computer operation, telephone receptionist duties, and record keeping duties.

GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: preparing prescriptions and ordering glasses from optical manufacturers; managing the optical activity of an optometry clinic; documenting care activities in electronic health records; interviewing patients and records healthy history and other appropriate findings; reviewing electronic and/or paper charts of assigned patients to determine appropriate services based on patient needs.
OR completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level. GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: performing complicated frame measurements necessary to assure correct cosmetic, physical and optical performance; verifying spectacle prescription through use of lens meter, lens gauges and other instrumentation; assisting with one-to-one and group patient education relative to optical, ocular disease conditions and refractive problems; ordering all optical supplies and tools; preparing instrument, materials and equipment prior to beginning of clinic. OR completed 6 months (9 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. OR a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-06 grade level. GS-07: 1 year of specialized experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples Include: assisting in the triage of patients who present themselves to the clinic, or on the phone, to determine to severity of complaint; maintaining calibration for all necessary equipment and instrumentation of a regular basis; ensuring proper storage of pharmaceutical, supplies and instruments to comply with professional standards and regulations; instilling pharmacological agents into patient's eyes in preparation for ocular evaluation; assisting in the coordination of eye care programs of an optometry clinic. OR completed 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. OR a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position.
