Indian Health Service Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Pine Ridge, South Dakota

Summary

The incumbent will for most part be stationed within the Pine Ridge Hospital and Outpatient Clinics, yet may include work in other areas of the Service Unit, including Kyle or Wanblee Health Centers, LaCreek Clinic, mobile clinic, and other community outreach clinics. Incumbent works in a regularly assigned schedule, or rotation to provide continuity of medical services and may include on-call duties, work during evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.

Responsibilities

Provides comprehensive health maintenance and therapeutic medical care for pediatric patients, including health status evaluation and education, diagnostic assessment, preventive care, and treatment of newborn/pediatric/adolescent patients. Interviews parents or other caretakers and the patient; examines pediatric patients; reviews past developmental, psychological, social, and medical history; and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests, examinations, and consultations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case. Makes preliminary diagnoses. Directs, prescribes, or provides therapeutic medicines and treatments or arranges referral for specialized care of pediatric patients as required. Adapts educational material/methods to meet the audience/patient level of understanding. Teaches and counsels patients and family on disease prevention and health maintenance techniques.

Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes. Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities. Selectee is required to obtain and maintain staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. You will receive instructions on how to obtain and submit fingerprints and background investigation documentation. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. The investigation must find that you are suitable for Federal employment in your position. If you are found not suitable, you will be terminated after you begin work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Provide comprehensive health maintenance and therapeutic medical care for pediatric patients, including health status evaluation and education, diagnostic assessment, preventive care, and treatment of newborn/pediatric/adolescent patients. OR, Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program. GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Provide professional advanced practice nursing care to newborn/pediatric/adolescent patients; knowledge of pediatric drugs, their desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use; react promptly in emergency situations including the implementation of life saving procedures; provide counseling, guidance and health instruction to patient, family member/care taker. Additional selection(s) of candidates may be possible within 90 days from the date the certificate of eligibles was issued for this announcement. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.
