JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Laboratory Services will work with budgets, develop and implement operating systems, hire train, and evaluate staff, as well as manage quality improvement processes. Responsible for assuring that services are provided in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner that enhances patient, staff and physician satisfaction in collaboration with appropriate interdisciplinary team members. In addition, the director will be responsible for enhancing practice and services, ensure that the department meets all regulatory body requirements and assist with developing policies for management functions for Laboratory Services, which includes activities and relationships with the Avera Laboratory Network. The Director will serve as a resource/consultant for all Lean Projects within the Hospital as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, developing, training, and retaining employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and completion of National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) program required.

  • Master's Degree preferred.

  • Four years progressively responsible clinical laboratory technical experience required.

  • Experience/understanding of Lean/6 Sigma is preferred.


  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from the American Society Clinical Sciences (ASCP) or equivalent is required.

  • This position requires a valid driver's license and that the employee is insurable by the Avera Health automobile liability insurance carrier.
