POET Purchasing Specialist in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

POET Design & Construction (PDC) supports the mission by providing high quality, timely and cost-conscious engineering, procurement and construction services. We provide this support through value-added design and technology innovation from a knowledgeable, hard-working staff. We work closely as a multi-disciplinary team, in a dynamic, fast-paced, ever-changing environment delivering the best product in the industry. In addition to the EPC services, POET Design & Construction also performs procurement for the 28 POET Biorefineries.


As a Purchasing Specialist in this newly created position, you will be responsible for daily execution in purchasing for POET Design & Construction and for assigned locations for the POET Biorefineries. You will place orders, track orders, work with vendors and on-site personnel to ensure great communication and timely delivery. The Purchasing Specialist’s role is to provide fantastic customer service to our POET Biorefining locations and POET Design & Construction team while ensuring a top-notch reputation with our vendors on execution.


  • Receiving and reviewing purchase requests for completion and authorized approvals.

  • Preparing purchase orders, obtaining quotes and carrying out related administrative tasks.

  • Assisting Buyers with vendors to negotiate pricing and obtain information related to price, specifications, delivery and sources of supply.

  • Processing and maintaining purchasing records, such as costs, delivery, vendor scorecards, inventory and usage.

  • Investigating discrepancies between purchase order, receipt and invoice.

  • Communicating and working with vendor, company management and appropriate department personnel to resolve issues.

  • Providing backup support to other purchasing specialists or buyers to cover or assist in coverage, scheduling conflicts, etc.

  • Supporting processes to maintain optimum inventory levels that serve the production process and ensure on-time deliveries.

  • Providing support to other procurement processes including vendor qualifications and RFP documentation.

  • Evaluating contract performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and to determine need for changes.

  • Initiating and supporting improvement projects to current processes or policies, including the development of standard operating procedures (SOP) and work instructions.

  • Partnering with other procurement staff to ensure accurate and timely delivery with excellent customer service to our Biorefineries and construction projects.

  • Negotiating basic purchase order details.

  • Since we’re all about teamwork and getting the job done, your skills may also be put to a lot of other uses.


  • Degree in business or technical field and 2 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Great interpersonal skills, possessing a high degree of professionalism and customer service.

  • Demonstrated relationship-building skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills as well as flexibility to adapt to change.

  • Honest, ethical, and conscientious.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic and changing environment.

  • Self-starter, eager to learn and change the world.

  • You know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite, in particular, Excel and Word. You’re capable of learning new programs.

  • Up to 10% travel to visit bioprocessing sites and corporate offices for training, meetings and site visits. At times overnight travel will be required.

  • Specific physical requirements may include:

  • Working at a personal computer for approximately 90% of the time where you can sit or stand.

  • Occasionally lifting weights of fifty (50) pounds or less.
